Forget the finish line – our runners aim is the wine-line! While we may pass 9 County wineries along our 11km route we don’t drink their wares along the way, rather, we enjoy the fruits of their labour (and ours) at the final stop. Each participating winery has been asked to feature one of their wines.

This combined with the warm growing conditions of 2010 has produced a substantial Riesling with loads of peach, lime cordial, honey, and minerals. There is only a dash of residual but the ripeness might actually trick many in thinking that it is sweeter than it actually is.” 90 Points Evan Savioli, Tiding’s Magazine.

Broken Stone Winery opened it’s tasting room doors on the May long weekend 2013. They’ll be featuring their 2011 Pinot Noir with zesty cherry aroma’s. You may notice a hint of vanilla spice on the finish. Sip with your closest friends; pair with lively conversation over a cheese tasting platter or savour after our run!

Casa-Dea Estates Winery will be featuring their 2010 Pinot Gris. This wine has aromas of peaches, apricots, perfume and nuances of flint. The palate comes alive with a distinctive minerality, citrus and ripe fruit followed by a long, persistent finish. It has the distinguishing characteristics that we consistently find in the grapes grown in their vineyards.

The Grange of Prince Edward Vineyards & Estate Winery will be featuring their 2009 Estate Pinot Noir. This classic, earthy Pinot has notes of sour cherry-cranberry, herbal tea leaves, and spice. As it ages the fruit will soften and the earthiness will come forward.

By Chadsey’s Cairns is featuring their botrytis-affected Gewurztraminer for the runners. The 15-20% botrytis-affect on their Gewurztraminer has helped produce their first Alsace-style Gewurz. Its luxurious peach viscosity lies sumptuously on the tongue but its sweetness is not cloying. It is made from a combination of the County’s oldest Gewurztraminer planting (2000), their 2003 planting and the first planting by Doug Reid and Kate Greenaway (2008) in the Velo Vineyard that they purchased from them a year earlier.

Hinterland Winery will be featuring their 2012 Whitecap. How often do you encounter a bottle of sparkling wine is that both complex on the palate yet easy to drink? The Whitecap is highly flavourful & rich but also fresh with a cleansing acidity. On the nose the Whitecap displays delightful tropical fruit and ripe apples. The ripeness of the Vidal lent to the richness and weight, and the Muscat and Riesling provided the freshness, acidity and heady aromatics. The Whitecap achieves its bubbles by undergoing a secondary fermentation in a large stainless steel Charmat tank. The process was first discovered by French winemaker Eugene Charmat in 1907 and today is most commonly used in the production of prosecco. The Whitecap is a very fresh, aromatic and flavourful sparkling wine with tropical fruit on the nose and balanced acidity on the palate.

Rosehall Run Winery will be serving their Cuvee County 2011 Unoaked Chardonnay. This wine is a tasty combination of citrus fruits and floral aromas; on the palate it is dry with mouth-watering acidity and fresh minerality, plentiful lime, honeydew melon, white peach and green apple flavours leading into a crisp, refreshing finish.

The Old Third Winery will be featuring their 2011 Pinot Noir. They just released the first bottles over the May long weekend and our lucky runners will be delighted to this perfect pinot!

Norman Hardie Winery will be featuring their Pinot Gris 2012. This wine starts rich and voluptuous on the palate with ample spice, but finishes clean and crisp with a mineral inspired acidic finish. It’s perfect with pizza!

Lacey Estates Winery will be featuring their delicious 2011 Pinot Gris. With a gold pink tinge: peach pie nose: crisply dry, green peach flavour: light on the palate with a lemony finish. A perfect summer wine!
