2019 Run Results

WOW – this year’s run was AWESOME! Despite a slightly rocky registration process due to our new format, things got off to a great start when we all arrived at Rosehall Run Vineyards to kick off the 10.8km journey.

Yes, folks, this is not your average run – it’s not 10km exactly. It’s not a race, however, our top 3 female and male finishers do get to come run with us in 2020 as our guests. A big congrats to our top 6 runners who sped to the finish in under 40 minutes (again – as it’s not a race so we don’t have exact times): Laura Couvrette, Natalie Slomka, Kate Barrett, Dylan Barlow, Phil Teijeira and Tom McColeman.

Run registration DOES include an outstanding post-run party with lunch handmade by Chef Albert Ponzo (The Royal Hotel) and Chef Karin Desveaux and her culinary team from Loyalist College served with libations from our run partners including iced tea from Pluck Teas, wines from all of our winery partners, custom cocktails from Kinsip, ciders from The County Cider Co and chilly beers from Parsons Brewing Co!

Our runners brought some serious ZEST to the day with costumes ranging from a moose and his hunt club, a hive of bees, Cinderella, Flash Gordon, a bevy of brides, some pretty pink pigs, a bunch of brave hearts and some wine mavens.

We are so grateful to our run supporters whose participation enabled us to donate $5000 to the ROC and the Prince Edward County Youth Centre. “We are so grateful to Terroir Run for their generous donation to the PEC Youth Centre! Funds raised by Terroir Run specifically support the provision of nutritious meals and snacks and cover the cost of cabs from ROC programming. Lack of healthy food and access to transportation cause barriers that keep youth from participating in the programs and supports they need. With the help of Terroir Run, ROC continues to provide programming at no cost to  all youth in a space where they feel safe, included and are able to reach their full potential.” – Darlene Thompson, Executive Director

We wanted to share a few more insights about our 2019 Terroir Run. We had 153 runners and 31 post-run lunch guests (yes – you can buy tickets to the lunch only to join your friends and family members who run with us). 73% of our runners were women and 27% were men. The majority of our runners (74%) are in their 30’s and 40’s with 23% over 50 years of age. 82% of our runners hailed from Ontario and this year we had a whopping 18% join us from Quebec!

38% of our runners had run with us before. 47% of our runners heard about us through the grapevine (word of mouth) and the power of social media brought another 15% of our runners to us.

The majority of our runners stayed in PEC for 2 nights (72%) with the balance staying for one night (11%) or staying at home as they live close by. Most of our out of town runners stayed in hotels or B&B’s (55%) with the balance staying with friends and family.

70% of our runners took the opportunity to explore the County and visited wineries, breweries, cideries, and distilleries while here. 44% of our runners spent between $101-$250 on food and beverage purchases while in PEC and 47% spent $250+++ eating and drinking their way around our delicious county!

Our run is a social enterprise, a passion project and, a way for Andrew and I to give back to a community that we love. A way to support local businesses and truly showcase a taste of place. We encourage you to save the date May 30th, 2020 for our 10th-anniversary run – registration will open Oct 1st, 2019!

Charity Partner & 2019 Run Date Announcement

After 8 years of support for a wide number of County community initiatives Andrew and I are proud to announce that all of the proceeds and awareness from our annual run will be directed to the ROC in support of the Prince Edward County Youth Centre after-school food and taxi program.

We have a deep relationship with Prince Edward County, our run started as a personal project that celebrates the landscape, people and products in a healthy and fun way. However, at its heart the event has always been a platform to give back to this community we love.

The Terroir Run has become an annual spring tradition and attracts hundreds of people from across the province to participate. The economic impact is significant, over $50K into the local economy each year, and the thanks really is to our partnership and especially our runners. Thanks for being part of our great community!

We’ve always donated the run proceeds to support County initiatives including County FM, the Quinte Humane Society, Slow Food PEC, the Heart & Stroke Foundation, and Terry Fox to name a few. Although, they’re all extremely worthy we’ve always felt we can have more impact if we focus on a single cause especially one with a vision of giving ‘every young person in Prince Edward County an equal chance to excel in life’. To this end, we’ve identified and chosen the ROC& Prince Edward County Youth Centre or simply ‘The ROC’. We’ll be donatingall funds from our annual run, encouraging our runners, friends & family to make personal charitable donations, and will volunteer time to help develop food programming partnerships. Terroir Run has already donated $4000 this year from the proceeds from the 2018 Terroir Run.


Driven by a team of dedicated volunteers, the ROC began in 2000 with a belief in the potential of youth and a vision to help guide them through the major and recurring difficulties in their lives. A core element of the organization is the Prince Edward Coun

ty Youth Centre which provides a safe, supervised space for teens to flourish and grow. One challenge with their key after-school program is that many high-school students want

to participate but travel logistics make it extremely difficult. In the past the ROChas run a taxi program so kids outside the Picton area can use the centre without the anxiety of getting home but the consistency of this servi

ce was resource dependent.

“We’re thrilled to announce that Terroir Run will be donating funds to support a ‘Terroir Run Taxi’ and will also work closely with us to strengthen our after-school snack program”, says Lesley Lavender, Community Development Director & Special Projects. “The ROC provides a safe place for our young people to call their own, programming to develop life skills, an

d mentorship relationships that builds the confidence to succeed”, adds Darlene Thompson, Executive Director. “Knowing they’ll have a healthy snack and a ride home makes it easier for some of our kids to make the Youth Centre a regular part of their lives so we’re thankful for the Terroir Run partnership.”

Can you beelieve it’s been a month?

Wow – time flies when you’re having fun and we sure did at our 8th run! We mixed things up this year and started at Rosehall Run Vineyards. It was a perfect morning for a run – just the right temperature (even if we did have to run into a light wind)!

Our runners made it to the finish line at The Old Third Vineyard (slightly over 10.5km from the start) and were greeted by friends, family and some Flow Water (thanks Neal Brothers Foods).

While ours is not a race, we do reward the first three women and first three men who make it to the end. What do they win you might ask? A complimentary registration to our 2019 run and bragging rights! Congratulations to Jeff Green, Dan Kunz, Dylan Barlow, Nat Slomka, Megan Filion and Kate Barrett for being super speedy!

The 10+km runners were all nourished with an incredible meal prepared by chefs Karin Desveaux and John Schneeberger of Loyalist College and Albert Ponzo from The Royal Hotel with support from Frank Bryne and Paul Seneca. The vibe was set with chill tunes from DJ Ombudsman (aka Hri Neil) and lots of libations from our runner partners.

Going with the flow!

As a last minute addition to our 2018 run we are thrilled to be serving Flow Alkaline Spring Water at the finish line supplied by our good friends at Neal Brothers Foods.

They’ve supplied us with some of Flow’s new flavoured waters – lemon, cucumber, strawberry and watermelon! Flow Alkaline Spring Water comes from a family owned artisan spring in Bruce County, Ontario and is B Corp Certified!

A Sky full of Stars: Meet the craftspeople

We’re very lucky to be part of a remarkable community of passionate makers. Whether it’s wine, beer, cider, spirits, tea, cheese, charcuterie or the brilliant local agricultural components that go into these and more authentic gastronomic delights, Prince Edward County has them in abundance–the bounty of the County is often celebrated. In an attempt to capture participation and share appreciation each year we’re committed to sharing small notes about members of this remarkable group. Bruno Francois, co-founder & winemaker, The Old Third Winery

Some people are content to sit and watch the world go by. Winemaker, tinkerer, imagineer, philosopher and cancer survivor Bruno Francois is not one. Ask him about his last year to hear a story with a much welcomed happy ending. Speaking of which this is where you’ll find him as after 7 years of starting our run he and his partner Jens Korberg will host our finish-line — more so Bruno will join us and run it! To celebrate we’ll be sure to raise a glass of the @theoldthird 2015 Cider Cuvée, as like Bruno, it’s dry, fresh, and promises a lovely mineral finish;)



Mackenzie Brisbois, winemaker, Trail Estates Winery

On a cold, grey spring afternoon @trailestatewine winemaker @mackbrisbois reluctantly agreed to a photo. Like many talented craftspeople she’d prefer to let the product of their labour and passion speak for itself. Their marketers however shared that the 2016 Vintner’s Weis is “a great finish-line wine. The combination of Riesling and Chard Musqué are utterly refreshing and the off-dry nature is perfect for post-run recovery. (more carbs!)” I believe our runners will find the truth somewhere between this smile and the magic in their glass on June 2nd.



Emily & Kimball Lacey, winemakers, Lacey Estates Winery

You can’t help but notice the pride on the face of @laceyestateswinery winemaker Kimball. His daughter Emily is following in the family footsteps with a scholarship to @niagaracollege Viticulture program. #terroirrun runners can look forward to tasting their first unoaked chardonnay, the 2017 INOX Chard.





Derek Barnett, winemaker, Karlo Estates Winery

Thought to be a South American wine, #malbec is actually one of the original six Bordeaux varieties. This is the first to be grown and released in #princeedwardcounty. It wasplanted by @karloestateswinery founding winemaker and dear friend Richard Karlo and made into wine by the talented Derek Barnett. Only 90 cases. Our #terroirrun runners have another compelling reason to reach the finish-line.
