2016 Run Recap

Terroir_Run_2016_228May 28, 2016 was a fabulous day for a run in Prince Edward County! We had the most runners to date (125pp) and despite the hotter than usual weather (we peaked over 28 degrees at 10:00am) we had success right through to the finish line!

Our gracious hosts Bruno Francois and Jens Korberg of The Old Third Vineyard started our run off with a BANG! Elvis, a giraffe, Duff Beer lady, 2 students from Hogwarts Academy and 5 folks in wool kilts (hot, hot, hot) added some great ZEST to our run. We had two German Pointers go the distance with their owners, several pregnant runners (4 and 6 months along) make it to Norman Hardie Winery with the promise of pizza for lunch AND we saw a personal record for Malcolm Jolley of Good Food Revolution who completed his first ever 10km in 63 minutes!

Congrats to our Top 3 Female and Top 3 Male runners who will join us as our guests in 2017. You can read more about them here. Many thanks to Jo Dickins of Jo Dickins Photography and Joanne Welch for the great photos capturing the day! Visit Jo Dickins Gallery here and Joanne’s Gallery here.

Runners, their families and friends enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by the staff at Norman Hardie Winery, the volunteers of Slow Food the County and Andrew Hunter of Buddha Dog. Non-alcoholic refreshments were prepared by Propeller Coffee & Pluck Teas served with a smile by the Tethong family. All of our winery and cidery partners provided an array of their terroir to compliment the pizza’s and salads.

We’d like to thank our runners who helped us donate $500 to Slow Food the County Seed Fund to support good, clean and fair food production in the County, as well as, $500 to the Quinte Humane Society to support animals in need in the Quinte region.

We’re already planning for May 27, 2017 when our 7th annual Terroir Run will take place. Tickets will go live shortly (but not before our 2016 runners get advanced registration notice). We will be hosting a Pre-Run Buffet BBQ at County Road 33 Beer Co. on May 26th and a Back To The Start Barn Party at The Old Third Vineyard with Chef Jamie Kennedy and some stellar live entertainment on the evening of May 27th. Make sure to SAVE THE DATE and book your accommodations now!

Meet our Wineries: Lacey Estates Winery

Kimball Lacey

Winemaker Kimball Lacey

Guest Blog by Hannah Stein

In 1982, the Lacey Estates property was originally purchased, by Charles and Mollie Lacey, as a summer retreat; thus, beginning the journey towards their winemaking future. Known as one of the best areas for grape growing in PEC, Hillier’s clay loam soil produces wines with profound tastes, textures and balance. After planting the first vines of the field in 2003 with pinot gris, pinot noir and chardonnay, the Lacey family continued to develop and expand both their vineyard and palates, later introducing riesling, gewurztraminer and baco noir vines to their soils, as well. Today, Lacey Estates continues to operate as a family-owned winery, located in the beautiful area of Prince Edward County.

We spoke to Liz Lacey about the highlights of Lacey Estates, her family-owned winery…

What sets your winery apart from others?

Lacey Estates Winery prides itself on producing small batches of hand-crafted, terroir-inspired wines. Each plant in our vineyard has been personally planted by hand by members of the Lacey family. Hard work and dedication to the craft is what makes our wines stand out among the best of the best. Our tasting bar was handcrafted by the family, using 120 year old maple flooring from the 1800’s farmhouse beside the winery. When visiting the winery, our staff will guide you through our wines and explain exactly how to pair and best enjoy the wines at home and with friends.

Which of your wines is your personal favourite and why?

Choosing a favourite wine is always difficult because each one is unique in it’s own way and expresses true old and new world styles.

What should people most look forward to when visiting your winery during this year’s Terroir Run?

This year, we are offering Terroir runners the opportunity to visit us on Friday for a wine & cheese pairing during the day. They can drop by the winery throughout the weekend for a complimentary tasting, as well!

2016 Final Run Details

IMG_3124We’ve just returned from visiting our run wineries to pick up wine for next weekend, followed by a family trail run – it’s a great weekend to be enjoying all that the County has to offer.
There is still time to grab tickets to our annual pre-run dinner on May 27th at 6pm at County Road Beer Co where they will be serving us up eats from the grill and a special Runner’s Radler! Tickets are available here – get them before we close registration on Monday, May 23rd at 6pm.

Reminding all of you that the Terroir Run is NOT a race but rather a fun run and as such – we don’t issue runners bibs or time chips. The first 3 female and 3 male runners that make it to Norman Hardie Winery receive a complimentary registration for our 2017 run (non-transferable to other runners or future runs). We will not be tracking times so if this is important to you we recommend you track your time using your own device (smart watch, GPS on phone etc).

There are AWESOME runners kits which can be picked up on Friday, May 27th at County Road Beer Co at 1258 Closson Road between 6:00pm and 8:30pm OR on run day (May 28th) at the starting point of the run – The Old Third Vineyard 1258 Closson Road starting at 7:30am. The kits are packaged in a Wine Country Ontario wine bag and include your custom 2016 Terroir Run t-shirt (Me to We), a wine glass, a package of Pluck Teas, a gourmet granola bar by The Quirky Carrot and a package of Propeller Coffee Co. Registration also entitles you to partake in the delicious post run lunch at Norma Hardie Winery where we have a special surprise from Buddha Dog!

Each of you will be required to sign a waiver form when you pick up your registration kits. If you are picking up kits for friends or family members please contact us in advance so we can send you the form which you will be required to present in their absence.

The run happens rain or shine so please come prepared. There is a lead vehicle that will take any clothes/items that you want at the finish location (Norman Hardie Winery). There is also a follow vehicle that is there to support you if you can’t complete the run or need any other support (bandaid, water etc). There are 2 port-o-potties at The Old Third but NO other washrooms along the route so please go before the run begins!

There’s a transportation bus provided by Sandbanks Vacations that will leave Norman Hardie Winery at 7:30am and 8:00am to bring you to the STARTING point – that way your car is there for when you’re done. There is NO transportation provided back to The Old Third Winery AFTER the run so if you are leaving your car at the starting point you will need to make your own arrangements to pick it up after lunch. The run starts at 9am with a bang when The Old Third Winemaker Bruno Francois fires his bird banger and away we go!

There are 3 water stations (which are dog friendly) along the route – the first at Closson Chase Winery, the second at The Grange of Prince Edward Estates Vineyards & Winery and the final at the junction of Benway Road and Greer Rod supplied by Karlo Estates Winery. The route is mainly paved road with the exception of Benway Road, which is gravel. There is very little shade along the route so please wear sunscreen and a hat.

The run is a dog friendly event. If you are bringing your 4 legged friend please make sure they are used to running for 10km and stay well hydrated. They must also run on leash for their safety and everyone else’s.

We encourage you to put some ZEST into the day and run in a custome – there are some fun prizes from our sponsors including the grand prize of a $200 gift certificate from Zest Kitchen Shop (in Picton).

Brunch/Lunch is being served at Norman Hardie Winery between 10:30am and 12:30pm. We ask that you secure your seats  as soon as you arrive – the quicker you are seated the quicker you will be served.

We’d like to encourage you to visit the wineries on our run while you are in the County (and every time you come) – we couldn’t deliver this great taste of place experience without their support!

We look forward to running with everyone May 28th!

Meet our wineries: The Old Third Vineyard

Jans and Bruno from The Old Third

Jans and Bruno from The Old Third

Guest blog by Hannah Stein

In 2004, partners Jens Korberg & Bruno Francois decided to start looking for a property to plant a vineyard. Excited by the possibilities in Prince Edward County, they started to make a number of trips there and quickly fell in love with its history and beautiful countryside. They finally found a small property that was 90% plantable; the soil, drainage, heat and steep southern exposure gave it great potential to make fantastic Pinot Noir. The Old Third is farmed using a reasoned approach to organic viticulture, the goal being to reduce as much as possible the chemicals applied to the land, as to maximize its health. They believe that the finest wines are made with this philosophy. Taking its name from the original term for the area, The Old Third Vineyard is situated on Closson Road which bisects the Third Concession, a Crown grant near the end of the 18th Century.

We spoke to Jens Korberg, winemaker & co-owner of The Old Third Vineyard, about what this unique winery has to offer…

What sets your winery apart from others?
With 3,600 vines per acre, we are one of the very few vineyards who planted high density. Almost all others are low density, at 1000 vines per acre, with only a few at medium density. When densities are over 3500, such as ours, the vine is smaller, more efficient and their roots, which are in competition with each other, go deeper. This means that the fruit ripens earlier, the yield is lower and the canes harder sooner, so they have better winter tolerance. For this and many other reasons, vineyards all over burgundy and, of course, most of the finest around the world, are planted high density. Also, we do not buy our grapes; all of our wines are made from single vineyard, estate grown grapes.

Which of your wines is your personal favourite and why?
Like all of our vines, the wines are our children; we love each and every one of them.

What should people most look forward to when visiting your winery during this year’s Terroir Run?
At our winery, guests can enjoy a ham and cheese crepe with a glass of sparkling cider made in exactly the same manner as our traditional method sparkling wines. We also have our pinot noir and cabernet franc but the cabernet franc does sell out fast!
